About

Chubby 8 is a collaboration between Dutch fashion designer Conny Groenewegen and David Bennewith. Beginning her life as a commission for the graduating students of the Werkplaats Typografie in 2008 Chubby 8 is a physical/material extention of the essay 'Marianna, Hey! Together', which first appeared in the book Joseph Churchward. Derived from the digit '8' in Joseph Churchward's typeface 'Churchward Marianna' [1969] Chubby 8 follows a principle that computer letters might be reanimated to become funtional objects, more closely relating to the genus of their initial inspiration.

The 'Marianna, Hey! Together' essay is included in Printing Types: New Zealand Type Design Since 1870, ed. Jonty Valentine, published by Objectspace, New Zealand, 2009, pp. 39-49. The publication Printing Types: New Zealand Type Design Since 1870 can be downloaded for free here.
